Petite Plus Size Clothing: What It Means and How to Shop It
Petite plus is cut for women about 5'4" and under who wear plus sizes: shorter inseams, sleeves and body lengths in the same plus widths.
Petite plus size clothing keeps the plus-size fit through the bust, waist and hips and shortens what runs vertically: the inseam, the sleeve and the length from shoulder to hem. Petite is designed for women about 5'1" to 5'4", and petite short for women 5'0" and under. On our Catherines Suprema® Pant, that means a 27" petite inseam and a 25.5" petite short inseam, compared with 30" in regular.
If you have spent years hemming every pair of pants and rolling every sleeve, petite plus is the length you've been missing, not a different body type to fit into.
What is considered petite plus size?
Petite plus means two things at once: you wear a plus size, and you stand about 5'4" or shorter. The garment keeps its plus-size room; its lengths come down so hems, cuffs and waistlines land where they are meant to on a shorter frame.
It has nothing to do with wearing a smaller size. A petite plus pant is proportioned for shorter legs, and a petite plus top for a shorter torso and arms. The three places it changes most:
- Inseam: pants and jeans end at the ankle instead of pooling on the floor.
- Sleeve length: long and 3/4 sleeves land where they are designed to, not past the wrist.
- Body length: blouses and tunics skim the hip rather than reaching mid-thigh.
How much shorter are petite and petite short?
Across Catherines best sellers, petite takes about 2 to 3 inches off a pant inseam and about 2 inches off a blouse. Petite short takes off another 1 to 2 inches on top of that.
The gap is not identical from style to style, which is why the listed inseam or length on each product page matters more than the word "petite" alone. A 1-inch difference between two petite pants is the difference between a clean break over a flat and a hem that brushes the floor.

How do I know if I need petite?
If you regularly hem pants, push up sleeves, or find that tops hang longer on you than they look on the model, petite is worth trying. Height is the starting point; how regular lengths fit you is the confirmation.
Signs regular lengths are too long for you:
- Every new pair of pants or jeans goes straight to the tailor.
- Sleeves cover your hands or 3/4 sleeves reach your wrist.
- Blouses and tunics fall well past where they sit in product photos.
- Dresses feel long overall even when the size is right.
Shoppers describe the difference plainly. One noted she has to "hem up all of your blouses by four inches" in regular lengths; another, after switching to petite, wrote that the fit "was perfect for my short round stature," and a third said, "For once I didn't have to hem a dress."
How to measure yourself for petite plus
Measure a pair of pants and a top that already fit you well, then compare those numbers to each product's listed petite and petite short lengths.
- Find your inseam. Lay a favorite pair of pants flat and measure along the inner leg from the crotch seam to the hem, with the length you like for the shoes you wear most.
- Measure a top you love. Measure from the top of the shoulder down to the hem as a reference point for blouse and tunic lengths.
- Check sleeves on yourself. Note where 3/4 sleeves land; on a regular length they may reach your wrist rather than your forearm.
- Match to the closest listed length. If you sit between petite and petite short, choose by your height and the shoes you plan to wear.
- Size by width as usual. Pick your plus size from your bust, waist and hip measurements; petite changes length, not width.
As a rule of thumb, 5'1" to 5'4" points to petite and 5'0" and under to petite short. Your measured inseam has the final say.
How are petite plus sizes labeled?
Petite plus sizes add a P to the plus size, such as 0XWP through 5XWP or 16WP through 34WP, depending on the style. Petite short sizes often add an S, as in 0XWPS or 16WPS.
Three things to watch on each product page:
- Petite spans can stop sooner than regular. The Suprema® Pant runs 0X–6X in regular and 0XWP–5XWP in petite. The Georgette cafe blouse and Timeless Blouse run 0XWP–3XWP in petite.
- Some styles use W sizing instead of X sizing. Right Fit® jeans and pants come in 16W–34W, with petites in 16WP–34WP and petite short in 16WPS–34WPS.
- Not every style comes in petite short. If you need the shortest length, confirm petite short is listed before choosing a size.
Always check the specific size span listed for the style and length you want; availability by color and size can change.

Where to find petite plus at Catherines, by category
Petite and petite short lengths run through Catherines pants, jeans, capris and blouses, and many of those styles are among the brand's best sellers. Here is where each length shows up.
Pants and capris
Start with petite plus pants. The Suprema® Pant is a pull-on, straight-leg style in a stretch-cotton knit with an elastic waistband and deep pockets, offered in both petite and petite short in 0XWP–5XWP. For a more tailored work pant, the Right Fit® Pant (Curvy) is built for women who are fullest at the hips, with a zip fly and hook-and-bar closure, in a 27.5" petite and 25.5" petite short inseam.
For warmer days, the pull-on Suprema® Capri with pockets drops to a 19" inseam in petite and 17" in petite short, so it lands below the knee on a shorter leg rather than at the ankle.
Jeans
Browse plus-size jeans in petite lengths, or go straight to two best sellers. The Knit Jean is a pull-on slim-leg jean in a cotton French terry knit, with petite in 0XWP–5XWP and petite short in 0XWPS–5XWPS. The Right Fit® Curvy Jean is a stretch-denim straight leg with a zip fly and side elastic waist panels, designed for women fullest at the hips, in a 27" petite and 25" petite short inseam.
Tops and blouses
Petite blouse lengths are where shorter shoppers notice the biggest change, since a regular blouse can hang well past the hip. Among tops and sweaters, the georgette tie-sleeve cafe blouse goes from 31" in regular to 29" in petite and 27" in petite short. The Timeless Blouse, a crepe de chine buttonfront with 3/4 sleeves and button cuffs, comes in 29" petite and 28" petite short lengths.
Dresses
Some dresses and dress sets list a petite length alongside regular. Check each style's details for the petite length and size span before you order, since not every dress offers petite.
What if you are petite and full through the hips?
Let your height choose the length and your hips choose the cut. A woman who is 5'0" with full hips would start with petite short for length and a Curvy fit for shape, then pick her size from her hip measurement.
That combination exists in both Right Fit® styles above: the Curvy jean and the Curvy pant each come in petite and petite short, designed to address gaping at the waist and tightness through the hips. Pull-on knits like the Suprema® Pant and The Knit Jean are another route, with elastic waistbands that skim from hip to hem.
Frequently asked questions
Who sells petite plus size clothing?
Catherines offers petite and petite short lengths in plus sizes across pants, jeans, capris, blouses, tops and some dresses, including its exclusive Suprema® and Right Fit® collections. Petite size spans vary by style, so check each product's details.
Is petite plus the same as regular plus?
No. Petite plus keeps the plus-size widths but shortens inseams, sleeves and body lengths. Petite size spans can also stop sooner: the Suprema® Pant runs 0X–6X in regular and 0XWP–5XWP in petite.
What's the difference between petite and petite short?
Petite is designed for women about 5'1" to 5'4"; petite short is shorter still, for women 5'0" and under. On The Knit Jean, that's a 26.5" petite inseam versus 24.5" in petite short.
Is a size 16 petite the same as a 16W petite?
In W-sized styles, petite sizes carry a WP label, such as 16WP in the Right Fit® Curvy Jean. The inseam is set by the style rather than the size: 27" in that jean's petite and 27.5" in the Right Fit® Pant (Curvy).
Will I still need to hem petite plus pants?
Often not. Compare your ideal inseam to the listed petite and petite short inseams; if yours falls between them, choose the longer length and hem a small amount, or pick the length that suits the shoe you'll wear most.
