Plus Size Black Tie Dresses: Dress Codes Explained
Black tie means a floor-length gown or long dress set; formal allows long or elegant midi; semi-formal and cocktail mean knee-to-midi or a dressy pant suit.
Dress codes are really about two things: how long your hemline is and how dressed-up your fabric looks. Get those right and the rest is personal style. Here is what each level on the invitation means, and which of our Catherines special occasion styles fit it.

What does black tie mean for women?
Black tie means a floor-length gown or a long, dressy dress set. It is the most formal code most of us will ever see on an invitation, usually for evening weddings, galas and charity balls.
Our Masquerade Beaded Dress Set is our #1 dress for a reason, and it was made for exactly this: lightweight georgette with delicate beaded accents, a long tank-style dress and a matching jacket with sleeves that fall just above the wrist. Customers call it the head-turning dress. It comes in plus sizes 16W–34W and petite plus 16WP–32WP.
What makes a look black tie:
- Length: the hem should reach the ankle or floor.
- Fabric: something with drape or shimmer, such as georgette, chiffon, lace or beading.
- Finish: polished accessories, a clutch rather than a tote, and dressy shoes.
What does black tie optional mean for women?
Black tie optional means the hosts will be in formalwear, but guests may choose. A floor-length dress is always right; an elegant midi or a dressy pant suit is also welcome.
This is where a flowing maxi earns its place. The Georgette Flyaway Maxi Dress has a shirred empire waist, a V-neckline and a split flyaway overlay that moves with every step, and it is fully lined. It was designed for weddings, parties and formal events, so it can go fully black tie with the right jewelry or stay a touch softer.
What counts as formal attire?
Formal attire means a long dress or an elegant midi in a dressy fabric. It sits just below black tie, so you have more freedom with length, but the overall look should still feel like an occasion.
The Tiered Chiffon Maxi Dress is a good example: soft asymmetrical chiffon tiers, sheer short sleeves and a V-neckline with a rhinestone-trimmed keyhole, in sizes 0X–6X. Browse more long options in our Catherines maxi dress collection.

What is semi-formal and cocktail attire?
Semi-formal and cocktail attire mean a knee-to-midi dress or a dressy pant suit, usually with a little sparkle. The two codes overlap almost completely; cocktail leans slightly more toward evening shine.
The Midnight Dazzle Flyaway Dress hits this level well. Intricate beading at the collar adds sparkle, a chiffon-style overlay parts at the front for a flyaway effect, and the A-line drape flares from bust to hem with elbow sleeves. At 48 inches in Regular (46 in Petite), it is shorter than a maxi, which is exactly what semi-formal calls for. Sizes run 0X–6X and petite plus 0XWP–3XWP.
Daytime semi-formal events, such as an afternoon wedding or a luncheon, call for lighter colors and less shine. Save the beading for evening.

Can you wear a pant suit to a black tie event?
Yes, if it is full-length, made in a dressy fabric and finished with lace, beading or sequins. A three-piece pant suit with a jacket reads every bit as formal as a gown.
Our best-selling Lace Gala 3-Piece Pant Suit pairs a sleeveless lace tank with a scalloped hem, a removable open-front jacket trimmed in lace and sequins, and a pull-on pant with a covered elastic waistband. It is available at Catherines in plus sizes 16W–34W and Petite Plus 16WP–34WP.
For a little more shine, the Luminary 3-Piece Pant Suit is beautifully beaded, with a scoop-neck tank, bell-sleeve jacket and soft, fluid pant in sizes 0X–6X. Both are also strong choices for formal and cocktail events.
How do I know if a dress is formal enough for a wedding?
Check three things against the invitation: hemline, fabric and time of day. If all three line up with the dress code, the dress is formal enough.
- Read the code and the clock. Evening and black tie mean floor-length; daytime or semi-formal opens up knee and midi lengths.
- Check the hem in your actual shoes. A long dress should skim the top of your foot. If you are 5'4" or under, a Petite length keeps it from dragging.
- Look at the fabric up close. Lining, drape and embellishment signal formal; casual knits and prints do not.
- Plan your coverage. A matching jacket or sleeves keeps you comfortable in a chilly venue or a house of worship.
Length and coverage are the two things our customers ask about most. That is why so many special occasion dresses come as sets with a jacket and in both Regular and Petite lengths.
Frequently asked questions
Is a maxi dress automatically black tie?
Not always. Length gets you most of the way, but fabric and finish decide the rest. A cotton or jersey maxi reads casual; georgette, chiffon, lace or beading reads black tie. If it would look at home on a beach, it is not black tie.
Do I need sleeves or a jacket for a formal wedding?
Usually not required, but a jacket is wise for religious ceremonies, cooler venues and anyone who wants arm coverage. Dress sets and three-piece pant suits solve this neatly: wear the jacket for the ceremony, take it off for dancing.
What length should I choose if I'm petite?
Look for petite lengths so a floor-length look actually skims the floor instead of pooling. Several special occasion styles come in petite versions with a shorter hem, which also makes stairs and dancing easier.
Can I wear black to a formal wedding?
Yes. Black is a classic choice for black tie and formal evening weddings. Lift it with beading, sequins or metallic jewelry so it feels celebratory, and check whether the couple has asked guests to avoid any colors.
