What to Wear Under a Sheer Top or Open Cardigan

Wear a longer, wide-strap tank, about 30" so it falls below the hip, in a smooth knit that layers without bunching or showing straps.

The fix for a see-through blouse, an open cardigan or a breezy shacket is the same: a layering tank top that is long enough, wide enough at the strap and smooth enough to disappear under the outer layer. Here is how to get it right.

How do you layer a tank under a sheer top?

Choose a tank that reaches past your top's hem, has wide straps and is made of a smooth knit. Then check coverage while you move, not just standing still.

  1. Check how sheer the top is. Hold it up to a window or a bright lamp. If you can see your hand clearly through it, plan on a full tank underneath, not a bra-length cami.
  2. Pick the length. The tank should fall at or below the hem of your top. For most tunics and long cardigans, that means about 30" in a Regular length.
  3. Look for wide straps. They cover bra straps and sit where sheer shoulders and armholes can show what's underneath.
  4. Choose a smooth knit. A fabric with a little stretch skims rather than clings, so it won't add ridges under a lightweight blouse.
  5. Decide on color. Match the tank to your top for a seamless line, or choose a contrast to frame an open cardigan.
  6. Do the movement test. Raise your arms, sit down and reach forward. If the tank creeps up or a strap slips, size or length needs another look.

How long should a layering tank be?

Long enough to fall below your hip, which is about 30" for a Regular length. A tank that stops at the waist leaves a gap under sheer tops and open cardigans the moment you move.

Length also depends on your height. Choosing your proportion keeps the hem where it should be instead of bunching at the hip:

To check your own number, measure from the top of your shoulder, where a strap sits, down to the hem of the top you want to layer under. Your tank should be at least that long.

How do you stop a layering tank from riding up?

Length and fit through the hip do most of the work. A tank that ends below the hip and has room there has less reason to creep up when you sit, reach or bend.

  • Go longer, not tighter. A snug tank pulls upward as you move; a relaxed fit through the hip stays put.
  • Pick a body made for plus proportions. Our Catherines best-selling Suprema® Tank is designed with a longer body and a relaxed fit through the hip, and its product page says the 30" length "layers smoothly under blazers and cardigans without added bulk or bunching up."
  • Tuck strategically. Under a fitted blouse, a light front tuck of the tank into your waistband can keep it anchored.

How do you keep straps from showing?

Choose wide straps that cover your bra straps, and make sure the tank's armholes sit close enough that they don't gape under sleeveless or sheer shoulders.

Our Suprema® Tank's product page puts it this way: "Wide straps stay comfortably in place while providing confident coverage." That combination matters most under sheer blouses, where any strap shows through.

If you love a lighter look, the Crisscross Timeless Tank is described as "the ultimate first layer," with a crisscross cutout at the neckline and a gentle swing. It is a softer, more romantic option under an open cardigan where the neckline stays on view.

Which tank goes with which top?

Use a smooth, wide-strap tank under sheer blouses and shackets, and let the tank show as a color choice under open cardigans.

  • Sheer or semi-sheer blouse: a matching, full-length tank so the blouse reads as one smooth layer.
  • Open-front cardigan: a tank in a contrasting or coordinating color. The Shadowstripe Burnout Cardigan is a lightweight open-front topper that adds arm coverage without feeling heavy, and its product page suggests pairing it with the Suprema® Tank or Crisscross Timeless Tank.
  • Long shacket or overshirt: a tank close to the shacket's length so nothing peeks out at the side vents.
  • Blazer: a smooth tank that won't add bulk at the waist or bunch under the lining.

Is your top sheer? How to tell before you buy

Check the product description for words like sheer, lightweight, mesh, burnout or open-knit, and look for a styling note suggesting a layer underneath. When in doubt, plan on a tank.

"Is it sheer?" is a question shoppers often ask about lightweight tops and toppers. If a product page doesn't answer it, the questions section is a good place to ask, and a neutral layering tank is a safe default while you wait. Most all of our layering tanks are designed to be opaque and will not be sheer or see-through.

One piece, two layers: no straps to adjust and no tank to tuck.

Is there a top with the tank built in?

Yes. Our Catherines signature Cardigan and Tank One Piece Top gives you the look of a cardigan and tank in one easy piece, so there's no separate layer to adjust.

It has a tank inset, a relaxed topper and 3/4 sleeves, in a soft, stretchy fabric with a fluid drape. It's a smart pick for mornings when you want to look pulled together in two seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear a camisole instead of a tank under a sheer top?

You can, but a thin-strap cami is more likely to show at the shoulders and stop short at the waist. Under sheer fabric, a wide-strap tank long enough to reach your top's hem gives smoother, more even coverage.

What color tank should I wear under a sheer blouse?

Match the tank to the blouse for a seamless look, or pick a shade close to your skin tone when you want the print to stand out. Under an open cardigan, a contrasting tank adds a pop of color.

Can a layering tank be worn on its own?

Yes. Our Catherines Suprema® Tank is described as a piece to layer under a jacket, blouse or cardigan or wear alone, so it works by itself on warm days.

Do petite women need a shorter layering tank?

Usually, yes. A regular-length tank can bunch at the hip on a shorter torso. The Suprema® Tank comes in a 28" Petite and 26" Petite Short length alongside the 30" Regular.
