Between Plus Sizes? When to Size Up or Down
Between sizes? Size down in tunics marked “runs large,” size to your larger measurement in structured pants, and exchange for a different size free!
Should you size up or down when you’re between plus sizes?
It depends on the style, not on a single rule. Start with the fit note on each product page, then use these three guidelines:
- Roomy styles marked “runs large”: size down.
- Structured pants: size to your larger measurement, usually hips or waist.
- Still unsure: order the size the fit note points to and exchange for a different size if needed.
Shoppers in our Catherines reviews say “size up” far more often than “size down,” which is exactly why the style-level note matters more than habit. Always play it safe by confirming your measurements against our Size Chart each time you place an order, to ensure you're ordering the best-fitting size for your body today.
Why size down in Easy Fit tunics?
Easy Fit tunics are cut with a more generous fit and a longer length than standard tunic tops, and every style carries the same note: this style runs large; size down if between sizes.
That applies across the collection, from the best-selling Easy Fit short sleeve V-neck tunic to the 3/4 sleeve V-neck version. The scoopneck styles follow suit, whether you choose the Easy Fit 3/4 sleeve scoopneck tunic or the short sleeve scoopneck tunic. All are 100% cotton with side slits at the hem, so the smaller size still moves easily with you. We offer an extensive assortment in plus sizes 14W-40W.
If another tunic in our plus size tunics collection has no “runs large” note, treat it as true to size and go with your usual size.
How do you choose between sizes in pants?
Size to your larger measurement. Pants have to fit at the hip, seat, and waist at once, so a size that skims your hips sits more comfortably than one that pulls.
- Check the fit note and the reviews on the specific pair before you order.
- Pay attention to fit comments: one shopper said a pair ran “2 to 3 sizes smaller,” so a review can tell you what a size chart can’t.
- Choose the right length too (average, petite, or tall) so the hem lands where you want it.
Browse plus size pants and read each style’s fit details before choosing.
What if the size you chose isn’t right?
Exchange it. Exchanges are free for a different size or a different color of the same product, subject to stock. Final Sale items can’t be returned or exchanged, so check the fit note twice on those.
Frequently asked questions
I usually wear a 3X in tunics. Should I order a 4X in Easy Fit?
No need to go up. Easy Fit tunics run large, so stay with your usual 3X. If you’re between 2X and 3X, the 2X is the one to try first.
Do Easy Fit tunics come in petite plus sizes?
Yes. Catherines tunics come in Plus Sizes 0X–6X and Petite Plus Sizes 0XWP–3XWP. The regular length is 34 inches and the petite length is 32 inches.
How do I take my measurements before ordering?
Use a soft tape over light clothing. Measure around the fullest part of your bust, your natural waist, and the fullest part of your hips, then compare each number to the size chart.
